Redgie Walker-Small: A Bold Narrative in Ink and Canvas

Art work " internalizing the external"
Art work " internalizing the external"

Renowned for his deeply philosophical and spiritually resonant work, Redgie Walker-Small once again brings his distinctive artistic voice to the forefront with a new piece for Brilliant Vibrant People 2025 at Linwood Arts. An artist, Tā Moko practitioner, and free thinker based in Kaiapoi, Redgie’s work transcends conventional boundaries, delving into themes of genealogy, self-determination, and the infinite interplay between the individual and the universe.

His art is not merely an aesthetic experience—it is an invitation to wānanga, to engage in a dialogue with whakapapa, atua, and the echoes of our tūpuna. Through Tā Moko, Redgie honors the stories embedded in skin, and through his painted works, he expands this kaupapa onto canvas, creating pieces that pulse with ancestral energy and contemporary relevance.

Previously, Redgie’s Tū Pono series and works such as Māui Mua Walks and Manaia o ‘Awaiki have captivated audiences with their layered storytelling and rich symbolism, drawing from pūrākau and Māori cosmology. This latest work is poised to carry the same depth of meaning, inviting viewers to interpret its kaupapa through their own lens.

As Brilliant Vibrant People 2025 at Linwood Arts Eastside Gallery celebrates diversity and artistic excellence, Redgie Walker-Small’s contribution stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to both tradition and innovation—an art form that is as alive and evolving as the people it represents.
